The two earlier Toy Story films tackled the same themes of impermanence, rejection and loss of innocence but they always pulled back before things got maudlin. No character could get too far into a heartstring-tugging speech about the tragic futility of the toy’s lot before Mr Potato Head, world-weary cynic of the playroom, would silence them with some brutally crushing remark. I don’t know what’s got into him in the new film but someone has obviously put his mouth back on in the wrong place. This time, presumably because this is supposed to be the last in the series, the film’s creators have let the emotions all hang out.
