China's burgeoning aerospace industry could become the dominant supplier of commercial jets for Chinese airlines in the future, Boeing Chairman and Chief Executive James McNerney said Wednesday. McNerney expects the size of China's commercial-jet fleet to triple over the next 20 years to more than 4,600 airplanes, creating a $400 billion market opportunity. That's roughly 20 times the current value of Boeing's airplanes now in service in China.
Given the proportions of the growth, China's development of a regional passenger jet and a competing aircraft to Boeing's 737 will likely attract plenty of orders, he said.
"The Chinese aerospace industry--which today is a customer and supplier to both Boeing and Airbus--will also become a strong competitor of both of us," McNerney said.
